Peptide and compound research moves quickly, and most of it is published as primary literature rather than summarised for a general audience. Being able to read a paper properly, rather than relying on its abstract or a headline built around it, is the single most useful skill for anyone following this field. This page sets out a plain-terms approach to reading a research paper critically.
An abstract is a compressed summary written by the study's own authors. It highlights the result they consider most notable, but it rarely mentions sample size, the limitations the authors themselves flagged, or how the finding compares with other published work. Two papers with similar-sounding abstracts can differ enormously in what they actually demonstrate once the methods section is read in full.
Every study is carried out in a specific model, and the model determines what the result can and cannot support. In vitro studies examine isolated cells or tissue in a controlled laboratory environment. In vivo studies use a living animal model, most commonly rodents. Human clinical trials are a separate category again, with their own regulatory and ethical framework. A result observed in a cell culture does not automatically translate to an animal model, and a result in an animal model does not automatically translate to humans. Published literature is generally explicit about which model was used, and careful reading means checking this before drawing any conclusion.
The methods section describes exactly what was done: sample size, controls, dosing route in the study model, and how results were measured. The limitations section, where included, is where authors describe the boundaries of their own findings. Peer-reviewed journals require some form of limitations discussion, while preprints, which have not yet been peer reviewed, generally carry more caveats and should be treated with additional caution. Funding sources and conflict-of-interest statements are also worth checking, as they provide useful context for interpreting a result.
