Peptides are sensitive materials. How a batch is packaged, shipped and stored after dispatch has a direct bearing on whether it remains suitable for the research it was intended for. This page sets out, in general terms, why storage conditions matter and how cold-chain logistics work between dispatch and a laboratory freezer.
Peptides can degrade when exposed to heat, light, humidity or repeated temperature fluctuation. Degradation changes the composition of a sample, which in turn undermines the validity of any research carried out with it. This is why batch-specific Certificates of Analysis and appropriate storage are treated as connected issues, rather than separate ones, in a research setting.
Cold-chain logistics refers to the use of temperature-controlled packaging and tracked delivery to keep a shipment within a defined temperature range from the moment it leaves a supplier to the moment it arrives. This typically involves insulated packaging, cooling elements sized to the expected transit time, and a tracked courier service so that any delay can be identified quickly. The aim is to minimise the time a sensitive material spends outside its intended storage range.
Once a shipment arrives at a laboratory, general practice is to move it promptly into the storage conditions appropriate to its form, and to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which can accelerate degradation. Protecting samples from direct light and from humidity is also a general consideration.
